Travel Without Bed Bug Worries

Memorial Day is mere weeks away, and many North Carolinians are already planning their trips to the beach or other summer vacations.  But, it’s the threat of an unexpected nuisance that has many people wary of travel these days.

Bed bugs.

A recent study released by the National Pest Management Association stated that:

  • 12 percent of respondents had altered or canceled their travel plans due to fear of bed bugs
  • 25 percent had inspected hotel rooms for signs of the pests
  • 27 percent had washed their clothes upon returning from the trip
  • 17 percent inspected or vacuumed their suitcases after returning from a trip

Bed bugs can be found in every state and in homes or rental properties of all levels of income or cleanliness. But that doesn’t mean travelers have to be scared to travel.  A little caution and awareness will help prevent bringing these pests back home.

Although treating bed bugs requires a professional pest management company, there are several steps to help prevent bringing bed bugs into a home.

  • Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation and wash all clothing from the suitcases in hot water.
  • Before sleeping in a hotel or rental property bed, check the mattress, bed sheets and headboard for tell-tale blood spots or signs of bed bugs.
  • If signs of bed bugs are spotted, alert the hotel or rental property staff.  Each hotel or rental property should have a Bed Bug Management Plan in place to assist you as the problem is addressed. Asked to be moved to a new room that is not adjacent to the infested room.
  • Consider bringing a large plastic trash bag in which to store your suitcase during hotel stays.
  • Carry a small flashlight to assist you with quick visual inspections.

But the best advice?  If you suspect or see bed bugs in your home, call a professional pest management company like one of NCPMA’s member companies. Trying to treat a problem without a professional can make the problem worse and more costly.
